professional-opportunitiesPreconference Workshop: Religion and the Internet
Summary: From Annual Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers: Scholars of religion have generally focused on the importance of belief and interpretations of sacred texts, but the sensual experience of the sacred has not garnered as much attention. By the sensual experience we mean the ways in which religious and spiritual subjects creatively deploy a variety of material forms (text, picture, smell, sound, and touch) to generate devotional practices and produce sacred spaces. Mediation through the senses has always been at the heart of the actualization of belief and the genesis of spiritual humility. The human body becomes the site for both the production and communication of the immanent in a process through which the senses are honed and trained to trigger deep devotional sensibilities and emotions. As Birgit Meyer argues in her seminal discussion of the role of ‘aesthetic formations’ in shaping religious mediation, “meaning production is not disembodied and abstract, but deeply sensorial and material.”
